Canadian Finance Minister Jim Flaherty unveiled a website Wednesday that will allow Canadians to track how stimulus money is being spent by government.  Similar to the US government's Spending Tracker the Canadian site will only post information about stimulus spending that does not violate privacy laws.

"The website will help Canadians to assess how well parliamentarians, provincial and territorial governments, businesses and others are contributing to positive action on the economy," said a news release from Flaherty.

The website, which will be updated regularly, is an effective way to communicate with Canadians, he said.

The government appears to be taking a page from the administration of U.S. President Barack Obama, which has set up an elaborate website to track stimulus spending and projects across the country.

The federal budget, currently being debated by the Liberal-dominated Senate, allocated $3 billion for projects that can be started quickly. The money is slated to flow on April 1 and must be spent by June 30.
