Unemployment claims overwhelm state office New Web forms aim to ease phone delays

By Jenny Upchurch • THE TENNESSEAN • December 6, 2008

Tennesseans out of work and trying to file for unemployment benefits are getting a busy signal.

The state's Department of Labor and Workforce Development has been overwhelmed with a sudden, huge increase of jobless claims, most of which must be filed by phone.

P.S. As the nowpublic.com rookie who posted this, I'm glad to see Jenny Upchurch's byline on this story. Last Saturday, I talked with her at the Nashville Zoo. Her son was shipping out to Iraq on Tuesday; then on Wednesday, the jobs cut at the Tennessean were to be announced. I hope her son returns from Iraq safely soon.
