United Airlines and Continental Merger: Announcement Monday

News reports say Untied and Continental Airlines are very close to announcing a merger. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that the Board of Directors of Continental Airlines and United Airlines are  meeting Friday, separately, to hash over the deal

These people cautioned that negotiations could still fall apart as they did in 2008, when Continental backed away. But after a hiccup over pricing, the talks appear on track, they said. The combination would leapfrog over Delta Air Lines Inc. as the biggest airline.

If the merger goes through as expected it would mean that the newly merged Continental/UAL would become the largest airline in the world in terms of passengers carried.
