Update: 5,000 British job cuts in 12 hours
Update: This morning (12th Nov) official figures released that show unemployment in UK at highest for 17 years at 1.8 million with 2 million predicted by Christmas.
Over 5000 British job cuts were anounced today in under 12 hours and it's expected that this is just the tip of the job loss iceberg that's floating through the world economy as the downturn hits home.
Virgin Media who this week announced new deals with Sky were one of the companies making job loss announcements.
Official unemployment figures to be released this week are expected to reveal another sharp increase. Unemployment is currently rising at its fastest rate for 17 years – with an extra 164,000 unemployed people in Britain between June and August.
UK unemployment is set to climb even further after a range of British businesses today announced over 5,000 job cuts in under 12 hours.
This afternoon, Virgin Media announced that it will axe 2,200 jobs between now and 2012 in a major restructuring of the business.
The cable, internet and phone company, in which Sir Richard Branson is the biggest shareholder, has not finalised which departments or locations will be affected by the staff cuts. But it played down the economic climate, blaming instead the merger of NTL and Telewest in 2006.
This morning, Yell, the publisher of the Yellow Pages, revealed plans to cut 1,300 jobs in a drive to save £100 million. It is the second round of redundancies the company has announced in two years.

Thanks for the info. That's quite shocking. I wonder if we will see a return to the unemployment figures of a couple of decades ago?

To answer the original question, unemployment is at around 1.79 million according to the National Office of Statistics. With a claimant count of 939,900 in September 2008 (the claimant count being those actually claiming and receiving unemployment benefits).

The bottom line is we have a lot more losses in the future. I am hopeful we can get through this without too much loss to our poor. Some of us are fortunate, I am retired and secure. I see many of my friends and family in such an anxiety state about their jobs.. I wish there was something I could do

Noble sentiments politisite - I'm pretty well off compared to some but I look around and see the poor getting poorer - using local businesses rather than corporate can have an effect but the again corporate companies employ a lot of people too.

...and you know we won't count the global billion that are starving or with out descent drinking water....here we go...I wonder how "heavy" it'll get before the "economic global depression" eases up. Too many mouths? However, I guess we should be grateful for some form of national social security program. *Sighs*, looks like "cabbage and onions" again tonight.

scary times, similar things have lead us into WWII. Hope we will be wiser though this time around.

Today is Veteran's Day, which used to be Armistice Day. My Grandfather was in that one, in France, eventually told me about some things. That was the Great War, the War to End All War, the War Nobody Wanted. So they said at the time. Nobody will win the next one, everybody will lose.

Fairbanks - here in Europe it has always been known as 'Armistice Day' or 'Remembrance Day'.

Maybe the day can be some day transformed into a world observance of the end of war all over the world. Is it possible?

It is starting to get a little scary now. I wonder how many of these layoffs are necessary and how many are taking advantage of the financial downturn to "clean house" and pare down operations. I mean, I know things are bad, and fear that this is just the tip of the iceberg, but so many layoffs when the word "recession" has only recently started to be openly used?
