If you have ever watched the Sci Fi channel then you know an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) can wreak havoc on electronics.  It also might not come as a surprise to hear an EMP is also a byproduct of a nuclear blast, which is said to be the main reason why the Navy has handed over $7.5 million to L-3 Services to build an EMP generator. Instead of being used as a weapon (or so they say) the device will be used to test the resistance of military systems to specific EMP levels as a preventative measure in the event that they should ever be exposed to a nuclear blast. A large EMP generated from a nuclear blast detonated in the sky could send this country back to the stone age leaving electronics worthless.  If all goes well, the generator is expected to find completion sometime in 2010.

......And....... if all goes well in tests..... it should be deployed as a weapon in 2011

L-3 Services, Inc. in San Leandro, CA received a $7.4 million cost-plus-fixed-fee contract for the design, development, integration and production of a form, fit and function, environmentally sealed, state-of-the-art Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) Pulser and its associated control system. Work will be performed in San Leandro, CA, and is expected to be complete in August 2010. Contract funds in the amount of $1.25 million will expire at the end of the current fiscal year. This contract was competitively procured under an electronic request for proposals, with 2 offers received by the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division in Patuxent River, MD (N00421-08-C-0070).

EMP is a side-effect of intense radiation bursts, usually from a nuclear weapon. Its effect is to fry most semiconductor-based electronics within its effective range, which is to say most electronics these days. This gives EMP a potential offensive use via strategically placed nuclear airbursts. Rep Roscoe Bartlett [R-MD] has led the charge on this issue in Congress, working to establish an EMP Commission that has reported on the USA’s general vulnerability to such attacks.

The military’s interest in this issue is narrower and more specific. Military systems are checked for their ability to survive specific EMP levels – but to do that, one needs to generate an EMP. Since the exact fate of any one device depends on its resistance, the power of the original pulse, and its distance from the source, testing EMPs from devices like L-3’s pulser can be much smaller – and much closer – than the real thing.

World_Groove, I like this story. EMP killing all electronics, car electronics, phones. How should a protection work to protect the own equipment? Pacemakers flip out; dangerous ideas.

Scary stuff ! I don't begrudge the research or expenditure. In reality it WILL be a weapon, and one that can be used in preemptive situations, and as an afterthought oh yea...we can test our stuff with the technology too

thanks for the flag!

Thanks for the link, I did a search for EMP on here before posting the story and didn't see that one.

Thanks for the flag!

Searches don't often work. Your story is different, just related and really relevant.

What a way to go green.  If nothing works we won't need much fuel or electricity.  I wonder if this is going to be in Mr. O's energy plan.  One flip of the switch and we don't need that off shore oil at all or OPEC's for that matter.

Absolutely Hilarious take !

Works for me...I still have my horses for transportation, I just need to build a wagon and a war chariot first....

Actually I thought about this, and my take was that China is already creating such a beast in conjunction with Wal Mart as a means to have Chinese income go up a thousand fold in one sweep! think of it...one blast in N.Y.C., and millions of new Chinese made computers, t.v.'s, stereos, cellphones and such need purchased asap....

Similar to WWII to get us out of the depression.

Oh, jeez, you guys, don't give them any ideas. If you haven't noticed, they are monitoring this site, and making anonymous comments.

You are probably right.... ... I am just so used to being wire tapped by my own government it never crossed my mind not to give out such valuable strategic information on a public forum.  =-)
