The USS Independence, a littoral class combat ship, is completing the last days of builders trials. The USS Independence was built by General Dynamics CorpLockheed Martin has recently commenced construction of the third littoral combat ship, USS Fort Worth.

the US Navy has been working on the design of a new small combat ship, known as the Littoral Combat Ship, for several years.

General Dynamic Corp. has gone a different direction than Lockheed, using a trimaran hull for the USS Independence. The larger flight deck could conceivably host multiple large helicopters or F-35Bs.
