Verizon Wireless announced Wednesday, the Mifi, a portable hotspot that generates a wireless network for wireless enabled devices. Complete with a catchy name, the device can support up to five gizmos at one time ranging from laptops to gameboys and everything in between.

Made by Novatel, the MiFi has integrated CDMA (EV-DO Rev. A) and Wi-Fi (802.11b/g) radios. It sports a simple rectangular design in basic black. And since it's designed to be portable, it's also compact (3.5 inches by 2.3 inches by 0.4 inch) and lightweight (2.05 ounces).

Verizon will offer two monthly service plans for the potentially revolutionary device: a $40 or $60 subscription. The $40 plan will give the user 250MB of data while the $60 plan grants up to 5GB. Additional megabytes will cost either 10 or 5 cents respectively, depending on the service plan. Furthermore, for $15 the user can snag a 24-hour "DayPass" which offers unlimited data for the 24-hour period.

the slab is about as wide and long as a credit card -- goodness -- and features an internal battery that'll allegedly be good for four hours of use or forty hours of standby on one charge.

The Mifi is scheduled to be released May 17 for $99 with a $50 rebate.
