Wal-Mart is joining the other big-box stores that offer cell phone plans. Wal-Mart began testing the plans in around 200 stores in the US earlier this year, and is now trying to grab market share from other low-cost no-contract mobile providers such as Virgin Mobile (CDMA in the US and Canada) and Leap. The plans, marketed under the name Straight Talk, are ofered at $30 per month for 1000 minutes and 1000 text messages, and $45 per month for unlimited nationwide airtime and text messages.
Straight Talk, which is a partnership with TracFone, a unit of America Movil(AMX Quote), will offer two plans for either $30 or $45 a month and will be available at more than 3,200 Wal-Mart locations starting on Oct. 18.

Not useful for smartphone people, but that is obviously not their target market

Does Wal-Mart also do cell phone contract services? Are they Wal-Mart? There is one offering AT&T Service, 2 free phones, free install, 700 mins, carryover minutes, free nights & weekends for $60 a month -- but a 2-year contract. Are these people "Wal-Mart" or just another company who ends up costing $150 a month by the second year? El
