No other reasonable combination of other compounds that we tried matched the observations. The possibility of contamination from the Centaur also was ruled out.
Anthony Colaprete, LCROSS project scientist

NASA is confirming that it has found water on the Moon. NASA sent the LCROSS (Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite) to the moon last month on a one-way "Moon bombing" mission to analyze the contents of lunar dust and debris. After a month of analysis, NASA says that it has indeed found water on the Moon.

The impact created by the LCROSS Centaur upper stage rocket created a two-part plume of material from the bottom of the crater. The first part was a high angle plume of vapor and fine dust and the second a lower angle ejecta curtain of heavier material. This material has not seen sunlight in billions of years.

It's remarkable news - thanks for the post.

Remarkable, but not surprising. It would seem that we even understand the engine that produces that water.
