WFP: Free Rice – play, learn & donate!

Enhancing your vocabulary gives better command of the language and makes you more articulate. Being able to express yourself better can be a competitive advantage for school goers to those who seek to climb the cooperate ladder.

Ever since the potential of computer aided learning is realised interactive game oriented aides have been produced for years. Last year UN’s World Food Program (WFP) came up with a creative way to tie their need for rice to end the hunger with people’s thirst to improve the vocabulary, Free Rice Internet Game.

FreeRice database boasts a wide range of words to keep people from all walks of life and age interested. The game initially assesses the player’s strength by giving a set of words with varying difficulty. It then cleverly adapts the start level based on the player's responses. The difficulty level of each word in the database is continuously evaluated on the success all the players have with it. With the addition of 5 new levels in January this year, the total levels of the game stand at 55 now.

The simple rule of the game is with every correct answer, you earn 20 grains of rice for the WFP. Yes, with popularity comes the possibility to advertise. The advertisements are screened non-intrusively while you play the game. The money generated from the advertisement funds the rice grains you earn for WFP on top of your free vocabulary learning.

As of 30th March 2008, the FreeRice has donated 24,678,910,210 grains of rice.
