Wikipedia is changing how members contribute to online articles. The current system allows anyone to write and edit articles without revision, but will in the future require articles about people and certain organizations to be checked by an editor before they get published.

The change will initially be carried out as a two month long trial. It is scheduled to start in the next couple of weeks, according to a Wikipedia spokesperson. The trial has been overwhelmingly approved by a user poll, in which 80% of 259 users said yes to the new model.

The proposal was first outlined by Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales in January this year. It was met by a storm of protests from Wikipedia users who claimed the system had been poorly thought out or would create extra work.
