Woolworths' Jersey staff protest over redundancy pay

Woolworths employees in Jersey have started a peition they are urging everyone to sign after they received news that they will not be getting redundacy pay. There are 120 staff still left, but they were told that the UK stance on redundancy payouts will not apply to them as they are on the Channel Islands.

The Guernsey and Jersey branches closed on Tuesday, with the other 200 shops being closed this weekend and early next week.

More than 2,500 people have signed the petition launched by staff at the King Street store in St Helier.

But BBC business correspondent Martin Shankleman said it is understood administrators have already taken the decision not to make a special case of the Jersey employees.

Meanwhile, one Woolworths store manager from the Midlands, who did not wish to give her name, said she had been told to ensure as much stock as possible was sold and described her store as "barely recognisable as a trading shop".
