Jerry Yang Quits Yahoo, Stock Rises

Yahoo co-founder Jerry Yang has resigned from the struggling web giant's board of directors on January 17, 2012. Yahoo's stock rose 3.7% in after-hours trading in response to the announcement.

Jerry Yang, who co-founded yahoo with David Filo in 1995, was seen as a barrier to growth for the company, as Google and Microsoft continue to eat its lunch. Indeed, Bing is driving the back-end of Yahoo's search engine.

While Jerry Yang's departure may boost the company's outlook in terms of optics, the real problem is with Yahoo's development culture: when is the last time Yahoo innovated, or released a noteworthy product? This is not to say that Yahoo doesn't build anything, only that its offerings have either failed to achieve critical mass, or have been outpaced by competitors.
