The Ambassador car (above) was, till 10 years back, the workhorse on Indian roads.
Based on a 1950's Morris Oxford design, this car went thru 4 model upgrades in those 48 long years. Which is a tribute to its Indian manufacturer's customer sensitivity and designing capability. I mean, to change the shape of the fender 4 times in 48 years is nothing less than a marvel of engineering.
Its only with the liberalisation of our economy from early 90's that we started manufacturing international brands of cars in India. Today, cars designed and manufactured entirely in India are sold in the international markets.
The latest of Indian cars to make waves in international markets is the revolutionary "Nano" which is retailing at USD 2500 in India and abroad.
And oh, by the way, Indian company Tata Motors that developed this car, now owns Jaguar and Land Rover brands of Great Britain.
