Youtube Goes Offline: Downloadable Videos

For the first time (without third-party jiggery-pokery), Youtube videos will be available for download. Concurrently, some vids will be available for purchase. (Details on Youtube's announcements page)

The site is partnering with content providers to give users downloadable access to hosted videos under a Creative Commons license.

Since users have been trained to expect Youtube to equal "free content", we'll see what happens next. There would have to be, (I would imagine) some sort of policing or restriction on which videos would be enabled for download. In terms of free-vs.-fee, we'll see soon enough how the viewers/buyers behave.

So begins a new day for the venerable YouTube, the popular video streaming site is testing downloadable videos which include both a free and a for-pay model.
Videos available for purchase currently have a small link under the left corner, across from where the "Watch in High Quality" tab is currently placed. Clicking there will expose the Google Checkout gadget that carries the user through the transaction.
