Microsoft released Zune HD in the United States today. The 2.07"x 4.08"x .35" (52.7mm x 102.1mm x 8.9mm) device is the first portable media player which has a built-in HD radio tuner. The Zune will initially be sold in two versions: a 16GB in black for $220, and a 32GB in platinum for $290. More versions will follow later.
Plans to launch the Zune in other countries have not been confirmed.
The Zune HD has a 3.3 inch (8.4cm) OLED touch screen, which plays HD at 480x272 pixels with 720p video.
Zune owners will be able to buy and download movies at Zune Marketplace. A rental costs $4.99, and a download $14.99. All the applications on Zune Marketplace are free. More features.
Not released Tuesday, but being released later this fall, is a Zune video marketplace for Microsoft's Xbox 360 video-game console. The Xbox's video menu will be replaced by a Zune-centric one, with a Zune-esque design and Zune-esque compatibility. More on that later.
