Facebook's developer blog notes that you can now create Facebook-based applications and games that live on your own website. Developers can get deeper access to Facebook's networking functionality, except that they their app will "live" on their own site. Check it out. I wonder how this will affect Facebook's traffic. Anecdotally, I visit the 'book primarily to use a certain word-game app that I won't name for the umpteenth time... Without those extra pageviews, will Facebook miss out on ad revenue? At this point, do they care? After all, Facebook is ubiquitous and firmly front-of-mind amongst social-networking afficionados...

Update: Here's a quick Techcrunch quote:

I’m not sure anyone saw this move coming, but Facebook may have just changed the game again by essentially becoming an application host. It’s a clever move by Facebook in a year its competitors will get more serious about offering platforms themselves.
I predict loads of game-based data-mining splogs.
