Indonesian police to question Garuda pilot over fatal crash
The Garuda Indonesia Boeing 737 carrying 140 passengers and crew slammed into an airport runway in the central Javanese city of Yogyakarta on March 7, careening into rice paddies and bursting into flames.
A final report into the accident issued by Indonesia's National Transport Safety Committee (KNKT) in November said that Marwoto Komar ignored 15 automatic warnings not to land.
The report also blamed the co-pilot for failure to intervene and the local airport authorities for inefficient rescue efforts.
"God willing, at the end of this month, we will already be able to name (Komar as) a suspect," Bambang Hendarto Danuri was quoted by AFP as telling journalists after attending a hearing with a parliamentary commission.Komar was named as a suspect after the release of the November report, but has so far only met police for questioning as a witness.
They plan to question him as a suspect to gather enough preliminary evidence to compile a dossier to submit to the prosecutor's office for an indictment.
Danuri said a team, which also included representatives from the prosecutors' office, had left for Australia "because some people need to be questioned and there is a need to make (some information) more complete."
