NP Rank:
The Microsoft of the Wireless Industry?
A company named Vanu has developed software which allows a single handset,
like a cellphone, communicate across multiple networks. According to a New York
Times article entitled: Software That Fills a Cellphone Gap
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/09/23/technology/23prototype.html?_r=1&th=&adxnnl=1&oref=slogin&emc=th&adxnnlx=1190595611-yH7zHyOVdcDFHAGzXjVHZA
Vanu claims it's software can handle multiple cellular signals at the same
time, the way a computer can run a browser, a word processor and a spreadsheet
all at once.
A venture capital investor labeled the company “the Microsoft of the wireless base station industry.” His firm
also recently invested $8 million into the company. The simple logic behind
Vanu's business plan is that it’s easier and cheaper to upgrade software than it
is to send field technicians to cellular towers to add components.
Other major players in this industry are taking notice. I.B.M is working
with Vanu on a demonstration for a project to bring villages in India onto the
cellular network.
