UPDATE: Jeremy O Turner has written a great piece about Second Life and these attacks; read it here. Also, check out the comments we've been getting in (below) as they give very interesting perspectives on this story. Who knew virtual reality was so polarizing?

So far, two initial attacks have targeted a Reebok store and an American Apparel, which I would guess fall under the "strategically important" banner as opposed to the "agents of the state" banner...but I guess it depends on your perspective...

The attacks themselves are "white balls" which obscure areas of the screen--temporarily. So far Second Life isn't taking the attacks very seriously, but we'll see how that changes in the weeks to come. Here's a statement that Second Life sent us:

“The world of Second Life is host to wide variety of groups, with equally wide ranging opinions and perspectives. At Linden Lab we do the utmost to ensure the protection of creative expression, within certain bounds. Ultimately, instances in which residents engage in simulated violence will have to be taken on a case by case basis. We believe recent events involving SLLA protest lack malicious intent. Instances in which Residents feel harassed however, will be acted upon according to our terms of service.”

There is a bit of media suspicion that the SLLA are co-operating with administrators of Second Life in order to draw media attention to the virtual community. If that's the case, it's working. Would that then be "state-sponsored" virtual terrorism? However, a more likely explanation (in my opinion) is that it's a group of people just doing in online life what they wouldn't dare do in the real one: messing with the system.

Just yesterday I was talking to a friend who knows someone who designs virtual corporate conferences on Second Life. When the conference attempted to take a photograph within the world, a man with a turkey on his head ran back and forth, preventing the photo from being taken.

Then there is, of course, the Attack of the Giant Penises.

In short, I'm sure we'd all like to stick it to the man now and again, whether by "bomb," by turkey head or by giant penis, but many of us refrain...unless we're a virtual version of ourselves. As a coworker just pointed out, people generally use Second Life for one of three things: to meet with friends, to pretend to have sex, or to mess with each other. Or to make money, I suppose. Unless those darn penises get in the way.

A bombing campaign has been launched by a self-styled 'liberation army' in the virtual world, Second Life.

The Second Life Liberation Army (SLLA) is detonating computer versions of atomic bombs in a campaign to establish universal suffrage in the world, which is inhabited by more than four million people from across the world.

According to its website, the SLLA is the 'military wing of a national liberation movement within second life' dedicated to establish democracy, handing residents a vote in the direction of the world.

It accuses Linden Labs as 'functioning as an authoritarian government' and the only 'appropriate response is to fight'.

It wants the company to offer shares of the site at a fixed price to residents.

The SLLA insists it will 'not seek to harm the normal operation' of the online world and will only target 'agents of the state and of strategically important sites within Second Life'.

During an 'in-world' interview SLLA political office Marshal Cahill defended the campaign saying that the 'population of the world should have a say in the running of the world'.

Below is a video of the attack on the Reebok store from YouTube...it's kind of, well, boring. Sample YouTube comment: "Argh, what bomb? What the hell is the f*$#&n point whith this f*%^#n vido [sic]? ARgh i hate those f*&^%n nerds from seconds [sic] life."

The revolution will not be televised, but it will evidently appear online...

If I've not gone paranoid then why are we making this a mojor issue here?

Well, SL has many things to improve in order to enhance its security fetures. And I don't think we should lighten the word like terror or terrorism in such way. There are people who would care more about their real first hand life- than the second life. Well, revolution, freedom fighters...  these are what we see in everyday world-here in my country or in yours.

So, let's return to living life. And advise for SLers- ENJOY!

Salik, you are not paranoid, and we are enjoying this while it lasts. Mondays can be a bit dreary.

This is remotely related, but someone designed an "Anti-Griefer" object. The idea is that if someone is griefing you or a particular area, this item can flood them with images, almost certainly crashing their copy of Second Life.

As you might have guessed, that solves nothing. For one, the person can just restart the program and log back in.

More importantly, there's nothing to stop "griefers" from getting a copy of it and using it against just anybody. "Anti-Griefer", indeed.

And this isn't just a matter of theory; I was spending some time on SL when, boom! Piles and piles of textures, each of which reads,

GRIEFER: WHEN YOU CARE ENOUGH TO SUCK THE MOST

Even in SL the media goes for sensationalism rather than reporting the news *heavy sigh*

Haven't you heard of objectivity?  As for asking to use my photo...  forget it.  Come back to me when you start to write something worthwhile.

Why don't you do a piece on the french national front instead?  They're using sl as a recruiting/training ground.  That's a real story, and so is the resistance...
