So, why is Google doing this? Well, it is all about marketing.
"This is one of our holiday gifts to our users, and when you connect, we also hope you'll take the opportunity to try some of the latest Google products," the company said in a statement
Google will also prompt free Wi-Fi users to make a donation to any participating non-profits when they log in. Google promised to match donations made via participating Wi-Fi networks, giving people more incentive to give.
The one question that many people are raising is whether Google will be able to sustain the surge in traffic that the use of the free Wi-Fi is likely to produce, or will the service collapse, leaving many customers unhappy?
It is also not the first time that Google is giving out free wireless. Recently, the company partnered with Virgin America airlines to provide free in-flight Wi-Fi to Virgin's customers.
Google's competitor Yahoo decided to use free Wi-Fi to its advantage too. Yahoo will be offering free Wi-Fi in Times Square in New York starting today.
While Yahoo! is the place where your world meets the world online, over 500,000 of you take in Times Square each day and it’s become a central spot for New Yorkers and people around the world. We and our partners at the Times Square Alliance think it’s the perfect place to bring you free WiFi service.

One thing to watch out for: networks calling themselves "Google" which are actually open PC-to-PC networks. These are bad guys who want access to your shared files. Don't get punked.
