It appears that the Hezbollah-Israel conflict has seriously affected the cohesion of an already faltering governing unit in Israel. While the tensions between the Olmert administration and the Knesset have been playing out in the public for quite some time, it now seems that there is a growing rift within the upper exhelons of the military establishment and between civilian and military leaders responsible for defense policy. Ilan Harari, a high-ranking officer in the Israeli military, has publicly labelled the July war a defeat for Israel. This has drawn criticism from the IDF Chief of Staff, Dan Halutz. Halutz and several IDF leaders are also at odds with Defense Minister Amir Peretz over who should take over the northern command after the resignation of Uri Adam. Harari himself may resign soon, and there is growing skepticism concerning the competence of not only Olmert and Peretz, but Halutz himself... Again, it seems that a guerrilla war has strained the political mechanisms of an advanced state-military apparatus in a democratic society. Thoughts anyone?
