Let me start black history month a few weeks early. Barack Obama has plans of running for President of the United States, But will he be the first Black President or the 8th Black President? I know this posting will stir controversty but George Washington was not the first President of the U.S. Let's take a look at history.

Interesting read from Thaddeus in Memphis

John Hanson (April 13, 1715November 22, 1783) was a delegate to the Continental Congress from Maryland. Because he was the first man to serve a full term as President of the Continental Congress under the Articles of Confederation in 1781 and 1782, he has been called the first President of the United States, but this claim is inaccurate.

from: http://www.snopes.com/history/american/hanson.htm

Origins:   A prime example of why history is best learned from history books, not comic books (or the modern equivalent, web sites of dubious validity).

John Hanson was not the "first president of the United States." John Hanson has not been purged from history books by a wave of revisionist historians who refuse to acknowledge his true importance to American history. The plain truth is that John Hanson was never considered "the first president of the United States," even in his own time. And John Hanson couldn't possibly have been the "first president of the United States," because neither the office of President of the United States nor the nation known as the United States of America was created until after he was dead.

When representatives of thirteen British colonies in North America, assembled in an organization known as the Continental Congress, declared in July 1776 that those colonies would henceforth be independent of Great Britain, they realized that unity would be necessary in order to sustain and win a war of independence (and to maintain that independence afterwards). Accordingly, they soon began debating the Articles of Confederation, a plan for a permanent union, which was approved and sent to each of the states (as the former colonies now called themselves) for ratification. Disputes over the several issues (including the western boundaries of some states) delayed the approval of the Articles of Confederation until 1781.

It is important to note that although both the Declaration of Independence and the Articles of Confederation used the phrase "united states of America," neither of those documents was intended to create a single, unified country out of the thirteen former British colonies. Colonial leaders feared the creation of a too-powerful national government dominated by factions and so specifically refused to create a unified nation or to transfer sovereignty to a central government. Instead, they in effect created a national Congress to whom they could subcontract administrative tasks performed on behalf of all thirteen states: conduct foreign affairs, make war and peace, deal with Native Americans living outside the states, coin and borrow money, supervise the post office, and negotiate boundary disputes. Congress could not, however, raise money to carry out these tasks by levying taxes on the states, nor could it raise troops in order to defend the country or wage war, or even compel states to comply with the laws it passed. In short, the Articles of Confederation created a Congress extremely limited in authority, with insufficient power to carry out the duties assigned to it. Inevitably, Congress could neither pay off the war debt (because it could only print more paper currency, not raise money through taxation) nor protect the states' territories from encroachment by the Spanish and British (because it could not compel states to provide troops for the common defense); eventually the Confederation Congress lost much of what authority it had, often could not take legislative action because representatives had stopped attending meetings (thereby preventing the attainment of a quorum), and finally — out of money itself — transferred reponsibility for the national debt to the states in 1787. The Confederation government had been, in the words of George Washington, "little more than the shadow without the substance."

The key point here is that the Articles of Confederation did not create a nation called "the United States of America." They created, as stated in the first two articles, an alliance of thirteen independent and sovereign states who had agreed to "enter into a firm league of friendship with each other" while retaining their "sovereignty, freedom, and independence." The title of the confederacy so created was designated "The United States of America," but no nation with that name was created by the Articles of Confederation, any more than the formation of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization resulted in the establishment of a nation known as "NATO."

The failure of the Articles of Confederation led to calls for establishment of a centralized federal government with much broader powers than the Congress of the Confederacy, a task accomplished through the drafting and ratification of a new Constitution in 1787-88. It was this Constitution, not the Articles of Confederation, that created the office of a chief executive as part of a truly federal government for the United States — an office bearing the title "President of the United States of America" and first filled by George Washington, unanimously selected as the first President in February 1789.

Sometimes historical figures are relegated to the background because societal attitudes have led to a minimalization of their accomplishments, leaving future generations to re-discover and re-emphasize their contributions. Sometimes, however, they're relegated to the background simply because they were minor figures to begin with. John Hanson was far from an insignificant figure in American history, but if few Americans know that he was the first person chosen to preside over Congress under the Articles of Confederation, the primary reason is that the office wasn't one of much importance. Claiming that John Hanson was the first President of the United States doesn't help to preserve the memory of his real accomplishments — it merely perpetuates historical misinformation for trivia's sake.

I am studying history and currently earning my masters.  The picture of John Hanson on the left is the real photo, the picture on the right is senator  John Hanson, a politician from Liberia, who was involved with the resettlement of freed slaves in that country. Whilst this Hanson was indeed black, he also lived a hundred years too late.

Interestly the term race, white, red and black are not part of the human race.  The word homosapian did not and does not  signify races.  As the readers will note  black was used to exploit and build the nation called the United States. How could  it beperceived the ones that made this country in its beginnings were also torched in the manner they we were. Interestingly when facts are brought out that require thought and investigation cognitive dissonance enters the minds of the readers that are so called educated. Being educated to me means that I explore and research. Look deeply into delving the different pictures of John Hanson not available, ask yourself why is it so hard to think of the so called founding fathers of the United States above the law. The founding fathers of this country did not think very much of black african americans. Pls read the federalist papers and look at how african americans were thought of.

hahah thats funni i was wondering that too.

I think that it is very wrong and cruely for them to discard all of his pictures and turn some of them into a false picture of him. They should be happy that we have a president wheater they are American or African-American. That would make me wonder what they would do if there is a women president. Someone should stand up so that all of the presidents that was not recorded could be. I would do it but I am to young. But smater than an average teen my age. Either way it go we still got a African-American president Barack Obama is president. But I like your comment you do have a point and I hope you continue to make it because it is a good argurment at least from my point of view. Just keep your head up because you never know what may happen. And no matter how hard life gets don't give keep trying and trying because things don't happen for no reason.

I was always under the impression that Obama wasn't the first black prez due to the small FACT that he is Malato. Of coarse, with racist idiots spewing what they want so bad, these days it is popular to choose whatever the alleged "minority" is at the time and claim it as a tool of atvantage. As for the history of this guy? Who knows, many people will always blame "white americans" of BS they cannot back up. Point is, not one of you were their and history tends to always be written in a bias. The office of the Prez was not founded nore was this man ever appointed as such hence he was not the first US prez. What does this mean? Nothing. Instead of trying so darn hard to claim this and that about racial propoganda, why not put that effort into teaching the youth about the racist propoganda that is infused into their minds by the racist of today? Enough with the guilty white people thinking we own African Americans something, we don't. I do not, you do not, tell me, how many of us today owned a slave? How many generation do we have to go back before we even hear of this? If whites can be held for what someoe did hundreds of years ago then is it not fair to hold every race accountable for their actions today? Of coarse not. My ancestors happen to be Mohawk Indians so please, lets not get into who had it bad yada , yada, yada. Slavery was an accepted way of prophet back then as well. When the Zenu tribe first sold their people for wealth and gain to the English, it was those who treated them harshly against the laws governing slave ownership. Some of the history books make it seem like white Americans went to the ghetto of the day, kidnaped balcks and forced them to due hard labor while raping the balck wemon and lyching the men.

In any race, culture you will find many horror stories of what peole do to one another. Africa happens to have some of the most barbaric records of humanity due to one thing, human greed. The lust for power is being allowed in America  due to one thing, guilt, not by what is right. Was this man an important historical figure? I'm sure he was. Did white america change the pictures and vise a versa, absolute rubbish to even hint at that propoganda, sounds like something the Rev Wright would say or a Al Sharpton/ Jesse Jackson attempt to creat more racial tention.

My children are half black but they also are being educated about what unity is and how men should be treated equal. It's to bad that they get a free meal ticket due to race and that sooner or later, they will have some twisted view from some other racist pig babbling their propganda.

My ancetors were slaughterd by settlers in the US. My birth certificate is stamed by my Grandmothers tribal elder as proof of my heritage. By fed law, I am allowed to go to school for free, take atvantage of other "special" things but you know what? I never used it as a cruch. I have student loans just like that white kid down the street. I should not be given special situations based on something that happened years ago. Was it right? Nope, but neither was it right for my ancestors to stalk the night removing the scalps of innocent people. What I do is comon sence. I acknowlage that both sides have their good and bad and do not hold one more responsable than the other. The only thing that would show is the true racist at heart, unfotionatly, like many who have spoken on this subject............. An this is the future generation... no wonder why  our nation is falling.

He was the 3rd  President of the Continental Congress and the 1st President of the United States in Congress Assembled  .

His grandfather was a slave that bought his freedom and owned his own land. Most slaves during this period where indeed of African decent, Caribbean decent, or North American Indian decent or a mixture of both...all of which have a darker complexion than one of European decent.

During this period it was common for lighter skinned minorites to pass as "white" men or women. So it can very well be true that John Hanson is a black person or at least a person of color, but his peers may have thought he was white.

A LOT OF YOU HAVE INTERESTING COMMENTS, BUT THE TRUTH, AS ALWAYS IS LAYERED.

1. JOHN HANSON WAS BLACK. HIS FAMILY WAS PART OF THE BARBARY POWERS THAT ALLOWED THE EUROPEANS HAVEN IN THE NEW WORLD FROM OTHER RELIGOIUS ZEALOTS.

2. THE POWERFUL HANSON FAMILY PRODUCED AS MANY AS 5 JOHN HANSON'S EVEN ONE WHO WAS PART OF THE SWEDISH ROYAL COURT. HE WAS NOT THE GRANDSON OF A SLAVE. THE HANSON'S WERE ALWAYS FREE MEN.THE PICTURE OF JOHN HANSON THAT IS OFTEN PRESENTED, IS THE DESCENDANT OF THE JOHN HANSON WE ARE TALKING ABOUT, BUT HIS NAME WAS ALSO JOHN HANSON. DON'T GET IT TWISTED. BUT THERE ARE DRAWINGS OF GEORGE WASHINGTON AS A GENERAL PAYING HIS TRIBUTE TO THE SHIEK,SULTAN,CALIPH, OF AMARAKA(AMERICA) PRE-REPUBLIC.

3. THE ARTICLES OF CONFEDERATION , COME FROM THE IROQOUIS CONFEDERATION, WHICH COME FROM THE GREAT LAW, THE GREAT PEACE, WHICH HAVE BEEN ESTABLISHED GLOBALLY BEFORE OUR CAUCASIAN COUSINS WERE EVEN MADE BY THE LATEST AGE OF ICE.

4. BEFORE THE NEW LAND WAS THE DOMINION OF THE BARBARY POWERS (ALASKA TO PERU), IT WAS A PART OF THE KMTIC EMPIRE, CALLED TAMA-RE OR MERI-TA, IT WAS ALASO KNOWN AS ITA MARAKA, I. TAMARIKA AND MARAKA, LATER MOROKO (MORROCO), THEN TAMERIQUE TO AMERIQUE THEN TO AMERICA.

5. THERE WERE MORE INDIGENOUS BLACKS KIDNAPPED FROM FREE STATES AND TURNED INTO SLAVES THAN THERE WERE BLACKS BOUGHT TO THE NEW LAND THROUGH THE TRANS-ATLANTIC SLAVE TRADE.

6. THE FIRST DOCUMENTED CASE OF SLAVES IN AMERICA COMES FROM THE CORRESPONDENCE BETWEEN THE EMPEROR OF aMARAKA AND THE PHAROH OF ONE OF THE MIDDLE DYNASTIES FROM EGYPT, WHERE THE PHAROH SENT A LARGE NUMBER OF WHITE SLAVES TO THE EMPORER AS A GIFT. THE MOROCCAN EMPIRE (MOOR) EXISTED HUNDREDS OF YEARS BEFORE THE KINGDOM OF MORROCCO WAS ESTABLISHED BY ARABS IN 1956. JUST SO YOU KNOW.

THAT'S JUST THE HIGHLIGHTS, HOLLA BACK. WSUP TIMOTHY!

I wonder what your thoughts are on "governments in exile" specifically the Free Poles, Free French, etc. during WWII? Were those not legitament governments? What government paid the Revolutionary Army under George Washington? What organization did General Washington answer to during his pursuit of the war?

It is important to note here that John Hanson was NOT the 1st President of the United states of America under the Articles of Confederation.  This claim is a MYTH created by Seymour Wemyss Smith writing a book called John Hanson - Our First President in 1932.  Samuel Huntington was installed as the 1st President of the United States on March 2, 1781 an official ceremony in Philadelphia. This 1st U.S. Constitution, the Articles of Confederation, was unanimously ratified by all 13 States on March 1, 1781 creating "The Perpetual Union of the United States of America." At that moment the Continental Congress ceased to exist and the United States of America in Congress Assembled assumed all federal power under the new U.S. Constitution.

Resurrection

Would you also say that Black men were never hanged by a noose - from a tree?  Would you also say that Black People were never forbidden to read and write?  Third and last; would you say that Black People had crossed burned in their front yards?  Did you know that Elizabeth "Mumbet" Freeman was the first Black Slave to be freed by a court appearance.  It was not H. T.  Why was her name omitted, but her family descendants are yet fighting to include her name in Washington and in the history books.

Justice is a powerful word for this New Years 2009.  Justice will prevail no matter what is hidden, overlooked and omitted.  God will expose the dark and dangerous secret.  You can fool a generation for a while, but another appointed generation will rise and seek truth-and the truth will unfold right before your eyes.   Why do you suppose the $2.00 was placed out of circulation?

The truth is able to resurrect, and this year is the year of Resurrection.  The name and life of John Hanson can be turned and twisted for so long, but if the blood of Abel can try out from the dust of the ground-Watch out for truth and face the coming resurrection of truth coming to light.

What I have written is with a few grammatical errors, and that is the truth.  The fact remains-my words are written and you can read and comprehend.  I'm sure of that!

THE DOCUMENT THAT YOU'RE REFERRING TO CREATING THE PERPETUAL UNION WAS SIGNED BY JOHN HANSON AS THE PRESIDENT. THEN HE WAS PRESIDENT FOR 3 SUCCESSIVE 1-YEAR TERMS,I BELIEVE, AND WHEN THE TROOPS MARCHED ON PHILLY TO OVERTHROW THE GOVERNMENT FOR NOT BEING PAID, IT WAS JOHN HANSON WHO PAID FOR THE COUNTRIES SECURITY WITH SILVER FROM HIS PERSONAL FINACES. HE PAID FOR OUR COUNTRY, FINANCED OUR FREEDOM, LEVERAGED OUR LIBERTY. AND WE REPAY HIM BUT PAINTING HIM AS A FAT WHITE GUY OR PUT UP A PICTURE OF HIS DESCENDANT OF THE SAME NAMESAKE. WHAT ARE YOU KIDDIN ME, WERE BETTER THAN THAT. GIVE THAT MAN A COIN OR SOMETHING. WE NOT GONNA EVEN START WITH BIG BEN BEY,BANNIKER,FRANKLIN,ALMANAC, WATCHMAKERS FROM PHILLY LIVING AT THE SAME TIME WITH INTERNATIONAL TIES IN THE SAME PLACES THAT NEVER MET EACHOTHER. DON'T LET ME START WITH THE CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS,FRANCIS BACON STORY, JUST STOP IT.

Good Job Thad! It wouldn't beat my imagination to hear that the sand clock and pyramids for the pharoahs were actually fabricated in europe. And that the Egyptians copied it by means of culture transportation.

I read a book about those greek plagarists.  They went to Egypt, burst into the libraries, and claimed all of the Egyptian's centuries of knowledge and discovery as their own.  If you knew the time period of this "great enlightenment" you would know they were in social and political unrest with the wars and disputes going on... Know and learn the truth
