Let me start black history month a few weeks early. Barack Obama has plans of running for President of the United States, But will he be the first Black President or the 8th Black President? I know this posting will stir controversty but George Washington was not the first President of the U.S. Let's take a look at history.

Interesting read from Thaddeus in Memphis

WOW A PHOTO OF JOHN HANSON FROM THE LATE 1700's!!!

I didn't know they had cameras back then... astonishing! Sell it on Ebay, this is priceless!!! (NOT REALLY) Anyone with even one functioning neuron in their head should be able to see this is poorly staged ABSOLUTE LIBERAL REVISIONIST NONSENSE!!! There are no bounds to liberal stupidity!!!

Why do you think they call it history....? Because it's His Story!!

History is written by the victors, which is why it is so hard to find positive history facts on people of colour. But they will tell you all about slavery which they claim they are sorry for (well here in the UK they do) but when you hear about slavery how does it make you feel...? Angry? Sad? Confused? So you just being taught about the negative sides of black history is putting black people down almost saying that we were never good enough. But yet people are people regardless of the colour of your skin (I'm half white, half black) if we cut ourselves we bleed, if we're hurt we'll cry, we all have the same emotions we all feel pain, hurt, angry and happiness.

In the UK every day there are children as young as 10 years old killing (shooting & stabbing) and being killed and the majority is black on black.

How much more positive would it be to say to ALL children and adults look at Walter Tull, Mary Prince, Mary Seacole, Bessie Coleman, Dr Daniel Hale Williams, Madam C J Walker, Henry Blair, George Washington Carver, Sarah Boone, John Hanson, Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks and the list this endless, these black historian endured slavery, racism, segregation, and so much more, but yet they all over came these barriers and still achieved amazing things and all have contributed so much to world history not just black history. Most of these historians couldn't even read or write and would have to sign with an X. So if these great historians can achieve what they did in their time then any of us can achieve what we want in this time!!

I do believe John Hanson was the first president based on the research I have carried out and it is sad that still today hundreds of year later that he is still being covered up.

And someone had mentioned how people have white washed Jesus. I don't know how anyone could actually believe he was white just look at where he was born. You'd be stupid to think was white.

I am studying history and currently earning my masters.  The picture of John Hanson on the left is the real photo, the picture on the right is senator  John Hanson, a politician from Liberia, who was involved with the resettlement of freed slaves in that country. Whilst this Hanson was indeed black, he also lived a hundred years too late.

Sara,

This was NOT a painting!!! The image used on this site is poor quality, (on purpose I'm sure) and may pass for a painting, but it IS a photograph. John Hanson died in 1783 and photography was not invented until 1838. (55 years difference) For more thorough analysis of this photo go here

For a picture of the REAL John ("the Swede") Hanson go here. Why would they call him "the Swede" if he were a Moor? If you will fall for this blatant lie you will fall for anything!

This conspiracy theory crap IS A BRAZEN LIE and is racially divisive. STOP THE HATE!!!

LMAO!!! erinzdad You owned these racist fools. I did a little research and found the photograph plate at the Library of Congress. The photo in question is of a John Hanson, but it is from 1856. He was a Congressman 74 years too late to be the first black president.

A free Black man

It says in the quran: "if you don't know, ask those who know.

I was told by a co worker that John Hanson was the first black pres. I did some research.

The first thing is that picture at the top. That's a picture of Senator John Hanson from Liberia. Who was one of the first men to help freed slaves actually go back to Africa and start their own country. He lived a hundred years after the president Hanson. It's a dis to even equate him with this other Hanson dude who PROBABLY OWNED SLAVES.

The second thing that bothers me is, they elected a slave president. At that time they had slaves in the north. So slave masters voted a black man pres. Some  say his grandfather was a slave. In what part of amerikkka could a slave descendant be accepted as an equal in 1791.  I repeat 1791 when they had slavery from New York to Georgia.

Last but not least. The two dollar bill. I collect coins and paper money so I actually have a few. On the back of the two dollar bill is the signing of the Declaration of Independence. a no brainer. John Hanson couldn't possibly be on it. BECAUSE HE WASN'T A SIGNER OF IT.

I'm voting for Obama because he's black. As a black man I think that's a more important reason than what he stands for. We need a shot of pride. Black boys need to know that if they do the right thing they too can become president. But what we don't need is a stretching of the truth or a twisting of facts.

Allah says in his book

Those who know not are not equal to those who know.

Seek knowledge not propaganda even if that propaganda comes from your brother

A LOT OF YOU HAVE INTERESTING COMMENTS, BUT THE TRUTH, AS ALWAYS IS LAYERED.

1. JOHN HANSON WAS BLACK. HIS FAMILY WAS PART OF THE BARBARY POWERS THAT ALLOWED THE EUROPEANS HAVEN IN THE NEW WORLD FROM OTHER RELIGOIUS ZEALOTS.

2. THE POWERFUL HANSON FAMILY PRODUCED AS MANY AS 5 JOHN HANSON'S EVEN ONE WHO WAS PART OF THE SWEDISH ROYAL COURT. HE WAS NOT THE GRANDSON OF A SLAVE. THE HANSON'S WERE ALWAYS FREE MEN.THE PICTURE OF JOHN HANSON THAT IS OFTEN PRESENTED, IS THE DESCENDANT OF THE JOHN HANSON WE ARE TALKING ABOUT, BUT HIS NAME WAS ALSO JOHN HANSON. DON'T GET IT TWISTED. BUT THERE ARE DRAWINGS OF GEORGE WASHINGTON AS A GENERAL PAYING HIS TRIBUTE TO THE SHIEK,SULTAN,CALIPH, OF AMARAKA(AMERICA) PRE-REPUBLIC.

3. THE ARTICLES OF CONFEDERATION , COME FROM THE IROQOUIS CONFEDERATION, WHICH COME FROM THE GREAT LAW, THE GREAT PEACE, WHICH HAVE BEEN ESTABLISHED GLOBALLY BEFORE OUR CAUCASIAN COUSINS WERE EVEN MADE BY THE LATEST AGE OF ICE.

4. BEFORE THE NEW LAND WAS THE DOMINION OF THE BARBARY POWERS (ALASKA TO PERU), IT WAS A PART OF THE KMTIC EMPIRE, CALLED TAMA-RE OR MERI-TA, IT WAS ALASO KNOWN AS ITA MARAKA, I. TAMARIKA AND MARAKA, LATER MOROKO (MORROCO), THEN TAMERIQUE TO AMERIQUE THEN TO AMERICA.

5. THERE WERE MORE INDIGENOUS BLACKS KIDNAPPED FROM FREE STATES AND TURNED INTO SLAVES THAN THERE WERE BLACKS BOUGHT TO THE NEW LAND THROUGH THE TRANS-ATLANTIC SLAVE TRADE.

6. THE FIRST DOCUMENTED CASE OF SLAVES IN AMERICA COMES FROM THE CORRESPONDENCE BETWEEN THE EMPEROR OF aMARAKA AND THE PHAROH OF ONE OF THE MIDDLE DYNASTIES FROM EGYPT, WHERE THE PHAROH SENT A LARGE NUMBER OF WHITE SLAVES TO THE EMPORER AS A GIFT. THE MOROCCAN EMPIRE (MOOR) EXISTED HUNDREDS OF YEARS BEFORE THE KINGDOM OF MORROCCO WAS ESTABLISHED BY ARABS IN 1956. JUST SO YOU KNOW.

THAT'S JUST THE HIGHLIGHTS, HOLLA BACK. WSUP TIMOTHY!

John Hanson (April 13, 1715November 22, 1783) was a delegate to the Continental Congress from Maryland. Because he was the first man to serve a full term as President of the Continental Congress under the Articles of Confederation in 1781 and 1782, he has been called the first President of the United States, but this claim is inaccurate.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:John_Hanson_Portrait_1770.jpg

from: http://www.snopes.com/history/american/hanson.htm

Origins:   A prime example of why history is best learned from history books, not comic books (or the modern equivalent, web sites of dubious validity).

John Hanson was not the "first president of the United States." John Hanson has not been purged from history books by a wave of revisionist historians who refuse to acknowledge his true importance to American history. The plain truth is that John Hanson was never considered "the first president of the United States," even in his own time. And John Hanson couldn't possibly have been the "first president of the United States," because neither the office of President of the United States nor the nation known as the United States of America was created until after he was dead.

When representatives of thirteen British colonies in North America, assembled in an organization known as the Continental Congress, declared in July 1776 that those colonies would henceforth be independent of Great Britain, they realized that unity would be necessary in order to sustain and win a war of independence (and to maintain that independence afterwards). Accordingly, they soon began debating the Articles of Confederation, a plan for a permanent union, which was approved and sent to each of the states (as the former colonies now called themselves) for ratification. Disputes over the several issues (including the western boundaries of some states) delayed the approval of the Articles of Confederation until 1781.

It is important to note that although both the Declaration of Independence and the Articles of Confederation used the phrase "united states of America," neither of those documents was intended to create a single, unified country out of the thirteen former British colonies. Colonial leaders feared the creation of a too-powerful national government dominated by factions and so specifically refused to create a unified nation or to transfer sovereignty to a central government. Instead, they in effect created a national Congress to whom they could subcontract administrative tasks performed on behalf of all thirteen states: conduct foreign affairs, make war and peace, deal with Native Americans living outside the states, coin and borrow money, supervise the post office, and negotiate boundary disputes. Congress could not, however, raise money to carry out these tasks by levying taxes on the states, nor could it raise troops in order to defend the country or wage war, or even compel states to comply with the laws it passed. In short, the Articles of Confederation created a Congress extremely limited in authority, with insufficient power to carry out the duties assigned to it. Inevitably, Congress could neither pay off the war debt (because it could only print more paper currency, not raise money through taxation) nor protect the states' territories from encroachment by the Spanish and British (because it could not compel states to provide troops for the common defense); eventually the Confederation Congress lost much of what authority it had, often could not take legislative action because representatives had stopped attending meetings (thereby preventing the attainment of a quorum), and finally — out of money itself — transferred reponsibility for the national debt to the states in 1787. The Confederation government had been, in the words of George Washington, "little more than the shadow without the substance."

The key point here is that the Articles of Confederation did not create a nation called "the United States of America." They created, as stated in the first two articles, an alliance of thirteen independent and sovereign states who had agreed to "enter into a firm league of friendship with each other" while retaining their "sovereignty, freedom, and independence." The title of the confederacy so created was designated "The United States of America," but no nation with that name was created by the Articles of Confederation, any more than the formation of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization resulted in the establishment of a nation known as "NATO."

The failure of the Articles of Confederation led to calls for establishment of a centralized federal government with much broader powers than the Congress of the Confederacy, a task accomplished through the drafting and ratification of a new Constitution in 1787-88. It was this Constitution, not the Articles of Confederation, that created the office of a chief executive as part of a truly federal government for the United States — an office bearing the title "President of the United States of America" and first filled by George Washington, unanimously selected as the first President in February 1789.

Sometimes historical figures are relegated to the background because societal attitudes have led to a minimalization of their accomplishments, leaving future generations to re-discover and re-emphasize their contributions. Sometimes, however, they're relegated to the background simply because they were minor figures to begin with. John Hanson was far from an insignificant figure in American history, but if few Americans know that he was the first person chosen to preside over Congress under the Articles of Confederation, the primary reason is that the office wasn't one of much importance. Claiming that John Hanson was the first President of the United States doesn't help to preserve the memory of his real accomplishments — it merely perpetuates historical misinformation for trivia's sake.

It is important to note here that John Hanson was NOT the 1st President of the United states of America under the Articles of Confederation.  This claim is a MYTH created by Seymour Wemyss Smith writing a book called John Hanson - Our First President in 1932.  Samuel Huntington was installed as the 1st President of the United States on March 2, 1781 an official ceremony in Philadelphia. This 1st U.S. Constitution, the Articles of Confederation, was unanimously ratified by all 13 States on March 1, 1781 creating "The Perpetual Union of the United States of America." At that moment the Continental Congress ceased to exist and the United States of America in Congress Assembled assumed all federal power under the new U.S. Constitution.

Christopher Lazzaro

Firstly your insane.

His title ad technically the third President of the congress assembly is technically in todays terms the president of the house of reps.

It was not an executive position.

also he was NOT black.

There was a john hanson in the past that was an indentured servant. - He was a white "slave" who wanted to come to america and came on someone elses dime.

He was working to pay it off.

THE DOCUMENT THAT YOU'RE REFERRING TO CREATING THE PERPETUAL UNION WAS SIGNED BY JOHN HANSON AS THE PRESIDENT. THEN HE WAS PRESIDENT FOR 3 SUCCESSIVE 1-YEAR TERMS,I BELIEVE, AND WHEN THE TROOPS MARCHED ON PHILLY TO OVERTHROW THE GOVERNMENT FOR NOT BEING PAID, IT WAS JOHN HANSON WHO PAID FOR THE COUNTRIES SECURITY WITH SILVER FROM HIS PERSONAL FINACES. HE PAID FOR OUR COUNTRY, FINANCED OUR FREEDOM, LEVERAGED OUR LIBERTY. AND WE REPAY HIM BUT PAINTING HIM AS A FAT WHITE GUY OR PUT UP A PICTURE OF HIS DESCENDANT OF THE SAME NAMESAKE. WHAT ARE YOU KIDDIN ME, WERE BETTER THAN THAT. GIVE THAT MAN A COIN OR SOMETHING. WE NOT GONNA EVEN START WITH BIG BEN BEY,BANNIKER,FRANKLIN,ALMANAC, WATCHMAKERS FROM PHILLY LIVING AT THE SAME TIME WITH INTERNATIONAL TIES IN THE SAME PLACES THAT NEVER MET EACHOTHER. DON'T LET ME START WITH THE CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS,FRANCIS BACON STORY, JUST STOP IT.

He was considered the First under the Articles of Confederacy because he was the First Black President of the Continental Congress,... which were the decision makers, therefore he was the First in head!

This is a very interesting article.  And I also love the comments from the readers....I appreciate the long and extensive response of Henrid33.  I think John Hanson being the head of the Continental Congress does give him a perceived status of being President....but the title of President of the United States as we know it today or as we knew it back then with George Washington was definitely not one that John Hanson held.  Granted....I have also seen the images of John Hanson on the back of the $2 bill and I also am aware of the conflicting image of the painting hung in our nations capital.  So which is it?  I will give it this much....John Hanson did hold a position of power more power than any "black" man at the time (even in the north).  It was a significant position....but I await eagerly to find out the truth with solid evidence.

It is sad that pale skin Americans still will not give people color their rightful place in American History.  They want us to fight in their wars and die, but still will not treat us with dignity and respect.  John McCain feels that if you haven't been in the Military or if you don't agree with the war in Iraq, then you are not patriotic.  But why should black americans continue to fight and die for a county that in the 21st century still treats them as second class citizens? My son was in the Military for eight years and fought in the Kuwait war, the mother of my granddaughter fought in Iraq.  I still don't agree with the war or Senator John McCain.

We still don't make the same amount of money for the same jobs as whites do. Why?  The United States of America often implies that other countries don't treat their citizens equally or fairly.  But African Americans, Mexicans, Hispanic, etc., are treated unfairly on a daily basis.

A couple things that anyone can easily check and verify:

1.  At the top of this thread there is a photograph or daguerretype of John Hanson.  However, this John Hanson is a Liberian Senator from the nineteenth century.  The John Hanson that was the historical figure in the early years of the U.S. was a different John Hanson, who died in the 1780's.  And he wasnt black.  In fact, the first "photograph", the daguerretype, was invented in 1839, half a century after the "President" John Hanson had died.  So there is no way that the black dude in the picture is the same John Hanson.

2.  The scene depicted on the back of the $2 bill is of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.  The folks who are in the scene are the signers of the Declaration.  The list of who the signers were, and in fact who each of the specific figures were in that scene can be easily looked up.  John Hanson was not one of them, so it couldnt possibly be him on the back of the $2 bill.  The person who appears to be depicted as somewhat darker than the others is Robert Morris.

My take:  There are plenty of great and heroic figures in history that can be honestly claimed, there is no need to make up things and try to pass off myth as fact.  Especially if the myth is easily falsifiable, as this one is.
