OK, first I want to say that Tony was a bit over zealous. Second, I would add that Mike is a moron. Fabian, "cracker" has been said to come from the sound that the whip made (*crack*) and since the person who wielded the weapon was called a cracker. This story is a 14 karat fake for the following reasons-

1) The picture of the Black Hanson is a photograph. Photography was not invented until the 1830s. This was supposed to happen in 1781

2) Lerone Bennet Jr. 's classic Black history text "Before the Mayflower" concurs that the first Black American officeholder was John Mercer Langston (great uncle of poet Langston Hughes)-in the 1850s!

3) No Black history textbook has published this absurd claim.

4) Black Americans were largely voteless in the 1700s.

I am in fact a professor of African American history, and this stuff belongs with the Willie Lynch letter and other frauds on the roll when you run out of Charmin.

Go to the libraries for information, not Internet BS of dubious primary sources. As the BET video says, "Read a book! Read a book! Read a ---------ing BOOK!"

People, please!  Let's be careful consumers of history and not swallow any load of crap just because it makes us feel better as a country to believe we were so progressive as to have elected a black male to the office of President of the Congress.  Think about it, would a Congress that would not even discuss the issue of abolishing slavery over fear of losing the Southern states allow for such an election?  This is not a white-washing of history, this is a realistic assessment of what is actual and factual.

The portrait of John Hanson (the Swede) who held the office is documented, researched and proven.  The picture of John Hanson on the left - as identified earlier - is of the senator and 100 years later.  You can see this to be true because photography which would give you such a clear, crisp image such as seen in that photograph, were not available until the mid 1830s.

In reading alot of the above post it easy for use to say that he is black or he is whatever but lets take a look at historical facts.  Do you really believe a Dark skinned man would be accepted to lead a nation or part of a nation in those days.  My discovery of J Hanson is that his father is Swedish and his mother is Black/White which means his complexion would be almost white.  Look at his parent they both look white.  Lets move on to a more recent time.  President elect Obama is White/Black and us as blacks want to take all the credit for him being black.  Open your eyes people he represents for what he believes in which is we can all live as one.

Do me this favor picture Colin Powell with a white wig on and a painted portrait of that quality.  Would you believe he is white?

He was not black. This myth stems from the fact that his grandfather was an indentured servant. Many white people were indentured servents in those days. If you could not pay your debt in those days you became an indentured servant to the person that you owed the debt to.

One more thing, the picture that everyone claims is the real one is obviously a photograph and not a painting. The first photograph taken was in 1825. John Hanson died in 1783.

Teach the children about the over 250 slave revolts in the United States. Teach the children that slavery was ended in New York partly because the slaves kept setting the city on fire. John Hanson the First Black President of The United States.  I am trying to understand why is it so hard to beleive?  There were alot of things that were basically written off in the books when I was a school aged child.  I never knew anything about this man.  Even if he was not the "First Balck President " of the United States then why is it that almost no one has ever evn heard of this man?  They tell you that Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue 1n 1792 and that George Washington was the first president of the United States.  Why is it that since before Barack Obama was elected president does all of this comes out that he was not the President.  It does not take a rocket scientist to figure out that if this man was the first black president because if he served in any political office and after that the Constitution was written that means he was the HEAD in charge.  You all just need to get over it and accept the fact that blacks have more knowledge and sense than you all perceive us to know!!!!

I'm reading all the responses and I must say that we as a people, not a race should be in this together.  I never thought that all Presidents in the past had to be white.  We have had diversity among us since the beginning of time.  I believe that God intended for all of us to merge...so that color would not be an issue.  I just hate that the majority of history has been covered up or erased because of the color of someones skin.  Color does not detect intelligence!!  My ancestors are Cherokee and you have to realize that they to were slaves and to this day life on pitiful reservations.   Until this world realizes that we are all human, not black, white, oriental or any other race.....We don't have a chance

i am a south african and do not know much about the american history but even i can understand that John Hanson was the first prezzi but under a different rule in era and that they only had 1term appose to your 4term office run.
