The Joy of Music

Everybody loves music. For all of the different types of music, including instruments and words, there's someone who enjoys either creating it or listening to it. But have you ever stopped and wondered how beneficial the "creating it" is to our children? Sure, they can listen to music all day long and in different venues, such as the radio in the car, the educational show on TV or just a big brother's favorite CD.

But stop for a minute and consider all of the many benefits our children receive from learning and playing music themselves:

1. Music builds self confidence. When kids put the time and effort into learning the piano or perhaps the violin and succeed at it by virtue of playing the instrument in front of others, they begin to develop pride and self-esteem. This confidence manifests itself into other activities which you will want to introduce them to.

2. Musical education leads to success in school. According to The National Association for Music Education, academic success can be correlated with music study as "skills learned through the discipline of music transfer to study skills, communication skills, and cognitive skills useful in every part of the curriculum."

3. Music is fun. We love to sing with other people and when kids learn how to play an instrument they share that joy and love with others, helping to create bridges across societal gaps of any kind. Music touches all of our hearts, including the little ones who create it.
