In 1846 there was a war between the U.S. and Mexico. Mexico was defeated. In 1848 the U.S. and Mexico signed the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. This treaty transferred Mexican land to the U.S.. This treaty land later became California and Texas. This treaty land also later became part of Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Nevada. In 1854 the U.S. bought land from the Mexican government.
