The Vancouver Water! (We're all NOT going to die!)
Prefaced strongly with "In My Opinion":
The water.... there is nothing wrong with the water. I have been drinking it for the last week, and (twitch), there is absolutely (twitch, twitch) nothing wrong with me! If this were most other parts of the planet, it would be a minor inconvenience. Here, you have to wonder if the world is coming to an end. People have refused to run their dishwashers because they they think they are going to die if the water hits their dishes. Okay, perhaps that's ever such a slight exaggeration.
I made the tremendous mistake of making orange juice (from concentrate) and drinking it before I knew about the ban. I found out about the ebola-necrotizing fasciitis type virus lurking in our water supply at work, and promptly forgot about it by the end of the day. When I got home, I was thirsty and drank most of what was left. And then, I did the same thing the next evening for martinis (yeah yeah, the ones you drink before heading out to the club kind). In addition, the ice cubes were made with the same water.
When I take a shower first thing every morning, I enjoy the water rinse through my mouth. (That sentence actually took several attempts for some reason.) That probably means I ingested some of the bitter liquid like substance there as well. Brushing teeth... by that point, I was done with even bothering to think about boiling water.
Granted, the citrus and alcohol probably had some effect to lessen the danger..... but lets just say, I haven't been particularly careful. And, just from what I have read... it sounds like the worst that can happen is ... your stomach might get a bit upset, unless you are missing an important gene. I mean, they were shutting down essential services such as coffee shops because of this. You would think a regional disaster had occurred.
Then, there is the boiling. Hell... you would think that unless you bombard water with gamma radiation, you are in serious danger. I reckon it started with "oh, and you should probably boil your water", and then became bolstered to "boil it for 20 seconds", at which point the next person probably thought.. well, just to be sure, lets go with a couple minutes. Yesterday, I heard someone state that it should be double boiled for 10 minutes at a time... just to be certain.
And finally, I heard someone state that "It just goes to show how unprepared we are for a disaster." What?! We took the extreme measure of denying Vancouver coffee for crying out loud! That in itself was a recipe for city wide destruction... and we survived it... for the most part. Okay, so, there are still a few bodies that need to be cleared away but, we made out alright all things considered.
Silly.
Okay, I have a theory on this. I believe that "someone" saw an opportunity to wake the lot of us up. I expect someone thought... "Hmmm... lets just tell everyone the water system is 'kind of' damaged, and see how things go. And then we will all be a bit more prepared than we are now, when the big one hits and liquefies the city.'
I for one, will be damned upset if they shut the coffee shops down a second time.

I am pretty shocked that the people I know who call themselves enviros seem to think it is fine to buy a whole load of plastic bottles because of this 'crisis'. It is not neccessary!!! It is fine if you boil it!!! There is a poll at www.ChangeEverything.ca asking who is boiling water vs. buying it...it is interesting. It doesnt match up with the people around me I see buying it...
