This picture, posted without any commentary, is not worth a thousand words.

It requires a whole novel, perhaps its own shelf of books, or maybe an entire season-worth of PBS documentaries.

Who is this man? What is his story? Is it anything like this story?

We do not have much to go on.

The image belongs to NowPublic member ajw, and if you go to his member page, you get a couple of hints about this image. ajw are the initials of A.J. Wilhelm, who is a photographer.

But nothing more.

The image shouts of a society at the end of its tether. Madness raging at madness, where a few days ago, a report that 655,000 Iraqis have been killed since the US invaded their country was drowned out by the Foley email scandal.

Maybe we should all start screaming, or poke holes in our heads.

When Hilly Crystal opened CBGB OMFUG at 13th St. just west
of 6th Ave. in the 60's I asked what the acronym means...he said,
Country, Bluegrass, Blues, And Other Music For Uplifting
Gourmands, not exactly apt considering what the club became
on The Bowery. I think he also had a joint on 9th St. just east
of 6th Ave. in a former Gay Bar run by the wiseguys.
