Five-time Olympic champion Ian Thorpe has denied using performance-enhancing drugs and promised to clear his name after allegations made against him.

The French newspaper L'Equipe alleged that a test before Thorpe's retirement showed unusually high levels of naturally-occurring hormones.

"I have never cheated," said Thorpe. "I was in complete shock to hear of this report, I didn't know what to do.

"My accomplishments in this sport in people's eyes are being diminished."

I'm a huge fan of Ian Thorpe, and I really hope that he's innocent. Professional sport has gotten so far away from the actual athletic side of things that it has become unrecognizable.
