NP Rank:
Those Gallicans
As I was reading this article in Le Monde (nothing new about the French bishops and their 'panic' about the impending liberalisation of the usage of the Pian missal: everything is recycled 'old news'), it struck me that not once is Jean-Pierre Ricard, archbishop of Bordeaux, referred to as a Cardinal of the Holy Roman Church. I wonder if this has more to do with the fact that they are all old statists with pronounced anticlerical points of view at Le Monde or if this is an expression of Gallican sentiments?
I looked around and in four of the secular newspapers I checked, he is 'Monseigneur' only and archbishop, and in La Croix he is referred to as cardinal but remains styled 'Monseigneur': so I am wrong about the folks at Le Monde. There remains the question of Gallicanism, however.
