HIROSHIMA, Japan (Reuters) - Tens of thousands of people from around the world gathered in Hiroshima on Saturday to renew calls for the abolition of nuclear arms on the 60th anniversary of the atomic bombing of the city.
Under a blazing summer sun, survivors and families of victims assembled at the Peace Memorial Park near "ground zero," the spot where the bomb detonated on Aug. 6, 1945, killing thousands and leveling the city.

Two years ago while visiting Japan, I decided that it would be a shame not to visit the city of Hiroshima. When I visited the peace park, I was deeply moved. The park is tremendous and also beautiful. It is a testement to the city and the country's resilience.
At our library here in Texas we have a few picture books dedicated to Sadako, a child that died from the effects of the bomb that remained even some years after the explosion. The statue at the Peace Park dedicated to her and all the other children who suffered this tragedy swept up gracefully to reveal a girl with open arms, ready to fly.
Thank you, mtippett, for including the report. It's so easy to forget this anniversary, and that's something that shouldn't happen.

In April 2004 my wife and I visited Japan and toured Hiroshima and the Peace Park & Museum. We left deeply affected and troubled by the tragedy that befell this beautiful city and it's Citizens. This year on August 6th I was moved to post a pictorial memorial on my site at Flickr. Anyone who would care to view it can see it at:

We hope that in a small way this can help to ensure that something this terrible can never happen again.
