TIDE POWER PROJECT PLANNED

A TIDAL energy project could provide a third of Scotland's power and create hundreds of jobs, energy firms claim.

Scottish Power and Norwegian oil giants Statoil aim to build a device on the bed of the Pentland Firth to produce 1000 megawatts of power - as much as all Scotland's windfarms - through wave movement.

Scientists would calculate tides by the Moon to maximise the power generated.
