UPDATE: Watch some of the finalists in action, here

Three cheers for the Eastern Bloc! And the Eurasian countries! And Moldova! They are among the finalists in this year's massive Eurovision song contest. The contest started in 1956 and has been broadcast to broader and broader audiences each year--even those outside of the regions open to contestants. The finals air this Saturday across the world.

Television viewers across Europe picked up their phones to call or send an SMS for their favourite songs. Each country gave 1 to 8, 10 and 12 points, which finally resulted in 10 qualifying contestants. To keep the Final as exciting as possible, the scoreboard will only be reveiled after Saturday's Final. The chosen performers were all assigned one of the ten open slots in the Final.
