<?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Toronto’s City Hall and its Nathan Phillip Square is the most distinctive landmarks of the city designed by Architect Viljo Revell however few knew where the building stands were the original Chinatown.
In the mid-50s, City Hall expropriated two thirds of Chinatown to make way for the New City Hall and the Civic square. Many business and home owners were forced to move without assistance and aid. They did not received the appropriate sums for the lost their business and homes, many were not able to afford to re-open their business or purchase another property. Some old Chinese Canadian, like my aunt still holds certain resentment and sadness when this matter brought up.
Today, more than 40 years later, a ceremony was held to unveiled a commemorative plaque at the same spot where the original Chinatown was
