"Climbing Blind" is more than a metaphor when renowned blind athlete Erik Weihenmayer leads 23 blind and sighted high school students through the Peruvian Andes. The challenging "Leading the Way" travel experience organized by Colorado-based nonprofit Global Explorers teams 9 blind/visually impaired students with 14 sighted peers in a unique travel immersion program that combines learning, fun, and community service - all while breaking down barriers and tackling silent prejudices about blindness. Check out live dispatches from the teens as they travel - they're in the Andes through July 18 - on Global Explorers' website,
www.globalexplorers.org. Weihenmayer - the only blind person to summit Everest and an ESPY award-winning athlete - is the subject of the award-winning documentary "Blindsight," and his movie "Farther than the Eye Can See" was ranked in the top 20 adventure films by Men's Journal magazine. Global Explorers' 2006 inaugural "Leading the Way" trek to Machu Picchu was recently featured on the Travel Channel's "Accessible Adventures."

ennasnosrap, thanks for posting this. Sounds like an amazing journey for everyone involved. I find hiking difficult and I am sighted; I can only imagine the challenges of hiking blind. But then there's the rewards, too...
Great stuff. Thanks.
