The Washington Post reports that Saudi ambassador Turki al-Faisal has abruptly left the United States and ended his 15-month tenure at the embassy. He left so quickly and with so little notice that none of the niceties of diplomatic protocol could be observed — and with no explanation offered:

The weekly magazine of the Algerian daily El-Khabar recently published an interview with Mash'al Al-Mutairi, a Saudi oppositionist whom the magazine described as a former director of Saudi intelligence who left Saudi Arabia and today resides in The Netherlands. Al-Mutairi exposes the significant influence of the Saudi Interior Ministry, and discusses attempts by King 'Abdullah and Crown Prince Sultan to prevent the possibility of Interior Minister Prince Na'if's someday becoming king.

This is curious, Nuke.What in the world is going on here? Can't be anything good, not at this critical juncture for the US in the region. No wonder Bush is trying to buy some time, which, by the way, I think is a responsible thing to do.

The Interior Ministry is controlled by Wahabbi Sunnis.  The religion enforcers, and source of funding for most of the radical mosques that have been opened in Europe, the US and Canada. No, these are not good developments.  I think this has to do with an internal power struggle going on between the Wahabbis and the Royal Family.
