Two Nanaimo men who escaped from a prison work detail on the BMX track at the city's Beban Park Monday have so far eluded police.
Gavin Mcrae Perrin, 25, and Justin Randall Esau, 26, were with a work party from Nanaimo Correctional Centre before they took off.
They were last seen entering Bowen Park from White Street. Nanaimo RCMP and police dogs searched the area extensively but were unable to locate them.

Not surprising at all. As a retired Ontario Corrections officer I saw the lax outlook of minimum security institutions versus maximum security, having worked in both. Only when the Criminal Code and Canada's ridiculous policies are brought into line can we expect a secure society. The escapee's age is indicative of "what the hell, I've got nothing better to do today" attitude. Ontario jails are basicly a holiday resort for criminals where they do not have to worry about their next meal or committing crimes to live. As a youngster I stood outside the Don Jail in Toronto the day that the infamous Boyd Gang leader escaped. Later in life I saw the conditions of the cells of that era and I guarantee if today's cells were reworked to those dimensions and state we'd have fewer criminals ever wanting to see the inside of their local jail.
