Two South Carolina Toddlers Found Dead in Trash Bags Under Sink
HANAHAN, S.C. — Two toddlers were found dead in trash bags under a sink and their mother was taken to a hospital for evaluation, authorities said Tuesday.
The mother took the children to work with her Monday and left them in the car all day, Berkeley County Coroner Glenn Rhoad told The Associated Press. Rhoad said he did not immediately know the cause of death but autopsies would be done Tuesday.
The toddlers, a 1-year-old girl and a 4-year old boy, were found when authorities responded to a domestic disturbance call Monday night, authorities said.
Rhoad said he expected to release the children's names later Tuesday. He said authorities had been contacted by the mother's attorney and had not yet been able to interview her.
Hanahan Police Lt. Michael Fowler told The (Charleston) Post and Courier for a story published Tuesday that the mother was taken to a local hospital after she made comments about hurting herself.
"The mother was distraught," Fowler said. "The detectives will be busy following up on her whereabouts and those of the children over the last two days or so."
Hanahan police didn't immediately return a telephone message Tuesday.
Hanahan is about 15 miles north of Charleston.
Temperatures in Charleston reached 88 degrees on Monday.

Children's Bodies Found In Trash Bags Under Sink
Coroner: Mother Left Children In Hot Car All Day
CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Charleston police said Tuesday afternoon that the mother of two young children whose bodies were found in trash bags in their apartment is charged with homicide by child abuse.
Police found the bodies of the 4-year-old-boy and the 1-year-old girl under a sink at a Hanahan apartment complex on Monday night. They said a man who was holding Heyward when they arrived told them the bodies were under the sink.
Deputy Coroner George Oliver said the victims were Shawn Campbell Jr. and Triniti Campbell.
Coroner Glenn Rhoad said the children's mother, Sametta Heyward, took the children to work with her in Charleston Monday and left them in the car all day. It was 88 degrees in Charleston Monday afternoon. Autopsies are being performed to determine the cause of death.
Heyward was taken to a hospital for evaluation. Hanahan Police Lt. Michael Fowler said Heyward had made comments about harming herself.
"The mother was distraught," Fowler said. "The detectives will be busy following up on her whereabouts and those of the children over the last two days or so."
Officers said Heywood had to be restrained and was taken to the hospital because they thought she was having seizures.
Defense attorney Andy Savage said he talked to Heyward Tuesday, but she was grieving so much it was like he wasn't even there. Savage said he doesn't plan to ask for a bond hearing until he learns more about the case, especially about Heyward's mental health.
Charleston police are assisting in the investigation. Hanahan is a suburb of Charleston located about 30 minutes north of the city.

Toddlers Dead: Names Released

New details are in this afternoon in the deaths of two toddlers found in garbage bags inside a Hanahan apartment. Police found the children around 7:30 Monday night at apartment 24 at the Willows Apartment Complex on Remount Road in Hanahan.
Berkeley County Coroner Glenn Rhoad says the children did not die at the home. He says four year-old Shawn Campbell and one year-old Triniti Campbell died inside a hot car. He says the mother Sametta Heyward left a note...saying her babysitter backed out on her...so she took the toddlers to work with her in downtown Charleston. She left them in her car for the day. She told authorities, when she got off work, the children were not breathing...so she took them home and wrapped them in trash bags...and put them under the sink. A police officer found the children when he responded to a disturbance call. Investigators are now trying to sort out the pieces to this horrific case.
In addition to what they found inside the apartment, police found the mother's car in a nearby Arby's parking lot. The coroner says at some point after coming home with her dead children, she drove to Arbys to get something to eat. They don't know if her car wouldn't start...or if she intentionally left it, but it's another piece to this puzzle.
Heyward is at Trident Tech Medical Center. Authorities escorted her to the hospital Monday night for an evaluation after she threatened to hurt herself.
The Hanahan police department says they're in the midst of an ongoing investigation. The Palmetto Funeral Home in Charleston is providing free funeral services for the children.
We'll have much more on this tonight starting at five.

People never learn ... Back on a hot August day in 1997, another South Carolina mother left a newborn in the car all day while she played video poker. The child -- locked in a child restraint seat -- died. Read an update story from the Beaufort (SC)Gazette (Feb. 26, 2004) at http://www.beaufortgazette.com/local_news/story/3370010p-2999224c.html. Very sad stories.
