McConnell quits Scottish Labour leadership giving an indication that
the UK Labour Government is clearing the decks for a probable October
election.

Jack McConnell

Former first minister Jack McConnell has announced his immediate
resignation as Scottish Labour leader. The 47-year-old is to undertake
an education project to help children in Malawi and Rwanda, but will
stay on as MSP for Motherwell and Wishaw.

Mr McConnell had been under pressure to go since the Scottish National
Party won the Holyrood elections in May and has said his party needed
to re-engage with the people and develop new policies to rebuild
support.

Mr McConnell, who as first minister forged close connections between
Scotland and Malawi, has accepted a voluntary position leading the
educational work of the Clinton Hunter Development Initiative in that country, as well as Rwanda.

The organisation was set up by former US president Bill Clinton and Scots philanthropist Sir Tom Hunter.

This is the announcement that all politics watchers have been waiting for - they new it was going to happen, the question was when was it going to be timed for.

It now looks very likely that Gordon Brown will press the general election "Go" button and move to strengthen his UK position therby taking the initiative away from Alex Salmond and the Scottish National Party who are hell bent to break up the UK and head for separation and go for direct rule under the EU.

A time of quantum change ahead for the UK with the Welsh and Northern Irish all flexing muscles with their separate government assemblies.

The only surprise in this announcement is the link up with Bill Clinton and Sir Tom Hunter.

However it has to be taken in context that Gordon Brown looks to be going to appoint Jack Mconnell as High Commissioner for Malawi when the current commissioner's appointed period comes to an end, and it may be that Jack McConnell gets appointed to the UK House of Lords as part of his resignation package.
