UK floods spark call for wartime spirit
The British should respond to the UK floods crisis with the same community spirit they forged during the dark (but at least mostly dry) days of World War 2.
That was the message (minus my wartime-spirit-type-joke) from a town Councillor in one of the flood-affected areas who organised a team of volunteers including himself to fill sandbags as a defence against the rising waters. The volunteers ranged from children to senior citizens, many looking tired, who spent the whole of last weekend (the 21st./22nd. July 2007)filling the sandbags.
The sandbags will be used to help protect the homes of senior citizens and disabled people from the rising waters, and they will be delivered to them by the local Council.
The Councillor said that the flooding raised the question of whether teams of volunteers should be organised as a defence against flooding and other natural disasters in future, saying "Perhaps it is time to revive the community spirit of the wartime years."
But he added: "Sadly that community spirit seems to have been lost in the New Millenium."

I agree. These big catastrophes call to us to be more mindful of our neighbours, to be neighbourly. Thanks for posting this snapper.
