Victor Yushchenko addresses Ukraine

In what is seen as a conciliatory gesture to the opposition, Ukranian President Yushchenko has delayed elections by nearly a month.

Ukrainian President Victor Yushchenko has postponed the date of parliamentary elections after street protests and concerted opposition from his critics.

In a television address Mr Yushchenko said he was issuing a decree to schedule the elections for 24 June.

"The Ukrainian people deserve to have... better politics," he said.

He sparked a political crisis earlier this month when he dissolved parliament and called snap elections, which he originally scheduled for 27 May.

Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych and his government have refused to obey the decree and have blocked funds for the election while they await a decision on the legality of the order from the constitutional court.
