A primary school in Dumbarton was evacuated following the discovery of an unexploded World War II bomb nearby.

The device was found as work began at a new housing development in the Bellsmyre area of Dumbarton.

Staff and pupils at Aitkenbar Primary School were moved away and bomb disposal experts called in.

Police cordoned off the area and pupils were moved to nearby St Peter's Primary School where they were due to remain for the rest of the school day.

The shell was discovered by building workers at the site on Stoneyflatt Road at about 0830BST on Tuesday.

A 500m cordon was put in place around the building site as experts removed the bomb for further investigation.

All shops within the area were closed and householders were advised to stay indoors. The bomb was taken to a local quarry where a controlled explosion was due to be carried out.
