Update - Loss of 2006 Operation Migration Crane Flock
See Update Below - One Chick Survives.
regretfully announce the loss of the 18 juvenile Whooping cranes at
the Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge. The cranes died as a
result of the storms that swept through central Florida during the
evening and early morning of February 1 and 2.
Update - Earlier today the radio transmitter of one of the birds (chick 615) was picked up in two different places. After a search, the chick was found with a pair of sandhill cranes near the pen where all the birds were believed to have died. It apparently must have escaped the pen in the storm. Chick 615 is being closely monitored and it is hoped that it will survive.
