The innocent man was actually the passenger of the car. His sister found him dead on the sidewalk 100 feet from their apartment.
Investigators were struggling to piece together what happened when David Rivas Morales died Tuesday defending the driver from members of a crowd. There could have been anywhere from two to 20 attackers, Austin Police Commander Harold Piatt said.
The car in which Morales, 40, was a passenger had entered an apartment complex's parking lot when it struck a 2-year-old boy, Piatt said. The boy was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
During a "Juneteenth" celebration a man driving a car hit and injured a child. Some members of the 2,000-3,000 person crowd than went after the driver. A different man tried to stop the angry mob from attacking the driver when the mob than focused their attention on him.
During the dispute the man trying to prevent an incident was killed. The driver was able to get away and contact the police.
The driver is cooperating and police are still investigating.
Police believe 2,000 to 3,000 people were in the area for a Juneteenth celebration when the attack occurred Tuesday night. The man who was killed had been trying to stop the group from attacking the vehicle's driver when the crowd turned on him, authorities said.
The Austin Police Department identified the victim as David Rivas Morales, 40. The child was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Watch. This story will get buried by the media.

What are you smoking for lunch? "Buried by the media," as if there's a huge conspriacy where all journalists get together in a daily meeting and decide what news to overlook... get a grip.
Did you even READ where the two clips highlighted above come from? CNN and the Associated Press.
The only thing worse than sloppy journalism is sloppy readership.

Do you ever READ? Go to the local news sites and read the story then go to AP and CNN. All mentions of race are erased by the national media outlets.
While you are at it, check out this story. http://www.volunteertv.com/special/headlines/5483316.html The news media is covering up that one too. No mention whatsoever on the national media of a crime that consisted of carjacking, kidnapping, gang rape and sodomy, vivisection, and ultimately murder and the burning of the bodies. So don't tell me what sloppy readership is.

No, I will tell you exactly what sloppy readership is. You're now whining because "race" was left out of the CNN and AP stories? Before you were bitching about the fact that the "story will get buried by the media." Make up your mind about what you want to gripe about.
Clearly you were flat wrong about the media "burying" the story... so now you go on to something else. You wanna play the race card. Then you point to another story and then bitch that it's not front page news on the New York Times or not leading the line-up on ABC, CBS or NBC Nightly News. It's a henious crime, sure, but it's a local story nonetheless, or don't you understand the difference?
There are a thousand such stories out there, few of which get aired on the national stage. You need a media refresher course, but something tells me you'd rather be spray painting graffiti in an ally somewhere.
