This particular grievance started three years ago when the university claimed in a grant application to ACOA, the federal government's regional funding agency, that it had ownership of any intellectual property that might come out of research.
The university had also asked the researchers to sign documents agreeing to the stipulation, but they took the question to the union.
"The union is now part of that discussion in terms of insuring that members' rights are protected," said Peters.
"For the union, this is a big victory."
