Ryan Gallant, president of the UPEI Students’ Union, said he first heard about the Cadre’s drive for autonomy on CBC Radio. Gallant was the Cadre’s editor-in-chief before becoming the student union president.

Gallant said the Cadre’s push for independence may be due to the student union’s decision to confiscate an edition of the paper last winter that contained controversial Muhammad cartoons. The cartoons sparked outrage in the Muslim community for depicting the prophet Muhammad.
