US Defense Dept. Blocking Soldiers from MySpace, YouTube

The US military is denying soldiers in Iraq access to sites like YouTube under the shaky auspice that it puts too much drag on the department's networks.
This overlooks the fact that the Internet is an outgrowth of ARPANET, and that the DOD arguably has the largest chunk of bandwidth in the world to play with. The real reason, according to speculators, is that the DOD is seeking to put a stop to soldiers blogging about the ever deteriorating situaton on the ground

The Defense Department is blocking access "worldwide" to YouTube, MySpace and 11 other popular Web sites on its computers and networks, according to a memo sent Friday by Gen. B.B. Bell, the U.S. Forces Korea commander.
