I have always argued that the key to beating the Republicans (or anyone who sides with careless industry, the Dems included) is a strong stand on the side of the environment. The issue transcends everything, without a healthy living environment we have nothing anyway. Whether you live in the inner city, in the suburbs, or out in the wild this issue can not be ignored. Some people may think it is now cool to take a un-environmental stance, but they are few and just like playing politics.
And lawmakers of both parties may now think twice before voting against the environment, considering what else happened in these elections. The Sierra Club, the League of Conservation Voters and other green groups targeted a bipartisan "Dirty Dozen" members of Congress for defeat; nine were brought down, including the man pilloried as Public Enemy Number 1: Representative Richard Pombo, the California Republican who led the charge to drill in ANWR and gut the Endangered Species Act.
