The row over the bungled handling of Saddam Hussein’s execution gathered new momentum today when a senior American general admitted the hanging would have been “done differently” had it been carried out by United States troops.

The comments by Maj Gen William Caldwell came as an Iraqi government official said that one of the officials who supervised the execution had been arrested in connection with the investigation into the video footage.
